11 Tips for Loving One Another

If there was one thing that people could point to in your life and say, "That's how I know he/she is a Christian" what would that one thing be?

All People Will Know...

Jesus famously says in John 13:34-35,

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.  BY THIS all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

By THIS, Jesus says.  What's the this?  It's our Christ-like love for one another.  In fact, there is no other "this" in all of the New Testament by which Jesus says all people will know we are His disciples.

My goodness we better strive to get this figured out!

11 Tips for Loving One Another

A few weeks back, I got the privilege of preaching on this text.  As I prepped that sermon, I brainstormed a list of "tips" for showing Christ-like love for one another.  I had a few people mention that the list was super helpful and so I wanted to share it here in summary form.

  1. Begin to see yourself as a lover, not just a receiver.
  2. Think in terms of unconditional, sacrificial, steadfast love.
  3. Tell people how you feel.
  4. Listen well when others tell you how they feel.
  5. Give each other the benefit of the doubt.
  6. Ask yourself, "Where's the Beef?" (i.e. have the conversation that needs to be had in the context in which it needs to be had).
  7. Repent quickly, forgive fully.
  8. Break the consumer mentality.
  9. Come to terms with the fact that not all of your preferences are going to be perfectly met.
  10. Be willing to be inconvenienced for the sake of someone else's sanctification.
  11. Expect this to be a journey (for you and for others).
